INSIDE THE CROWN: SECRETS OF THE ROYALS
ITV, 9PM
WATCHING the Windsors recently has been like watching a live soap opera. It’s fair to say, what with news surrounding Prince Andrew and Prince Harry and Meghan, it’s been a bumpy year for the royals.
This series investigates what is fact and what is fiction, using historical documents and rarely-seen footage to tell the inside story – from the Queen’s Coronation to present day.
We can only imagine the producers have been furiously updating this opening episode, which focuses on the love and duty that comes with a royal marriage.
“You’re not just marrying a person, you’re marrying a job,” says one insider, while another questions the reality behind a fairytale wedding.
Starting with footage of Harry and Meghan, this looks at how their news has shaken the royal family and asks how they will forge their future.
But it’s not all about them. The doc moves seamlessly into the fascinating story of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, another royal scandal.
BEST HOME COOK
BBC1, 8PM
THE pressure has been on for these cooks, but kids are the harshest critics – so the Ultimate Kids’ Birthday Cake could be the breaking of them.
“It needs to make kids go ‘wow’,” says Mary Berry, who reminds them that she’s made lots of birthday cakes in her time.
Watch out for some wonderful creations, including a bonfire-themed cake, a unicorn, a fish and one based on Little Red Riding Hood.
Once they’ve recovered, it’s time for Chris Bavin’s Rustle Up challenge, testing what they can do with a leftover ingredient. This time it’s half a roast chicken and there’s been no time to plan anything.
Only the best cooks will avoid Angela Hartnett’s brutal Eliminator round which sees three contestants having to cook again as the others watch on.
The challenge this time is a steak. And er, the stakes are high, as the one who fails to impress will go home.
