Double killer is back in jail
A DOUBLE killer who was allowed out of jail on licence is back behind bars after breaching the terms of his release again.
Darren Pilkington pushed his girlfriend Carly Fairhurst, 19, down the stairs during a late-night row at a house in Higher Ince, Wigan, in January 2006, leaving her with fatal injuries for 12 hours before calling an ambulance. Carly never regained consciousness and died a week later.
Having already served jail time for punching and killing a man in 2001, he was handed an indeterminate sentence for public protection and was told by a judge he must serve at least three years and 53 days before he was eligible to apply for parole.
He was eventually released ten years into his sentence. Following his 2007 sentence, Pilkington, now 36, was released twice on licence since 2017, only to be recalled for breaching his licence each time.
Now it has emerged he has been recalled to prison a third time.
Carly’s parents, Trevor and Sheila Fairhurst, questioned why he was
Darren Pilkington released. Sheila, 63, from Hindley, said: “How many chances does he have to have before he’s locked up for good because he’s never going to abide by the law? It’s just the way he is and always has been.”
Pilkington was 24 at the time he killed Carly and had a previous conviction for manslaughter as well as a string of other criminal convictions.
A Probation Service spokeswoman said: “Public protection is our priority.”
