Get rid of Mayor to pay for transport

- Disgruntled of Urmston

I TAKE no great pleasure in noting that the two great cities of Manchester and Liverpool voted to remain Labour in the recent elections to propel the country forward out of Europe.

The thanks Manchester pensioners receive is that we are now being asked to pay an extra £10 from February 1st to travel on our excellent trams, albeit on two-car sets where we are just as likely to stand up as get a seat, or on trains which may, or more likely, may not turn up.

I put the blame for this on our Liverpudlian Mayor who seems to have a lot to say about everything but appears not to do anything, and on the issue to hand is certainly not supporting the ex-hard–working pensioners that have put Manchester where it is today.

I accept £10 is not a lot of money but next year could see the sum doubled or trebled, thus diminishing one of our most valuable assets.

My proposal is to remove the Mayor and his team and use the money saved to channel funds to support, rather than abuse, Manchester pensioners.

I only mention Liverpool in that they are only 35 miles away and they have Merseyrail instead of trams, their bus pass allows ‘free’ travel on buses and trains between Southport and Chester, the Wirral and even Mersey Ferries.

The same principle should also apply to Manchester.

I am sure our Mayor can talk his way out of the situation but when I meander my way around our city and see the signs ‘I love Manchester’ we are certainly being taken for a ride.
