Hornets add sting with new international signing
ROCHDALE have added further Super League and international experience in the shape of Sam Hopkins.
The 29-year-old forward began his career at Leigh Centurions and has spent time with Wigan Warriors and Toronto Wolfpack, before a spell with Workington in 2019, where he played alongside Hornets hooker Sean Penkywicz.
“After talks with Andy Mazey and seeing what’s going on at Rochdale recently, I knew the Hornets would be a great fit for me,” said Hopkins.
“I hope I can help them achieve all they want to this year. I’m very grateful for the opportunity and I really look forward to working with Matt Calland and getting stuck in with the lads.”
Hopkins made 26 appearances during Leigh’s 2017 Super League campaign and is a Wales international.
“I am really excited to get a player of Sam’s experience,” said head coach Matt Calland. “He has played at Super League level with Leigh, having played over 100 games for them.
“He has also played for Wales and his influence on what is a young forward pack will be invaluable.”
Rochdale will also play host to the third round draw for the Challenge Cup, which will be held at the Crown Oil Arena on Monday at 6.30pm.
The 11 winners of this weekend’s second round ties will be joined by the 11 Betfred League 1 clubs, with Championship sides to enter in round four, before last season’s bottom four Super League sides are included in the fifth round draw and the remainder in round six.
