Ole points to Anfield revival as inspiration

SOLSKJAER REFERENCES TIME GIVEN TO KLOPP FOR REBUILD

- By SAMUEL LUCKHURST

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer believes United can take inspiration from Liverpool’s revival under Jurgen Klopp as they strive to become a competitive force again.

United have lost eight Premier League matches already this season and are only four points above 14thplaced Newcastle United in what has been their worst start to a season since 1989-90. Solskjaer has received support from matchgoers, who have instead turned on the executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the club’s owners, the Glazer family.

United’s demise has coincided with the resurgence of Liverpool.

The Champions League winners are 16 points clear at the Premier League summit and are poised to end their 30-year championship drought in March or April. Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield in October 2015 and Solskjaer believes United are ‘doing great,’ despite their woeful form.

“I think our fans know what we have started on and I’ve been trusted to do that job by the club,” Solskjaer said.

“And, for me, that rebuild doesn’t go one way all the time.

“We’re doing great, we’re doing great, we’ve been winning games. I’ve said it so many times – there are ups and downs. The foundation has to be laid and the culture properly set and laid down.

“And with this group I feel I have a good core of players that believe in themselves and what we’re doing to carry and I trust them to be the good lads carrying us forward, with some signings of course, and players coming back from injuries.

“You don’t just take the roof off when you need to knock your house down. You need to put the foundations in. You don’t just start with the roof. We’ve had a couple of rainy days and we wish that roof was on but we can’t hide. When you start on something, you stick to that plan, for me anyway. I’m not going to change six or nine or 10 months into the job and starting believing in a different way of doing things. “For me, we do have a way of doing things. You can see other teams have done well. You can see Jurgen spent four years building his team and they’re doing well now.

“It’s not going to be a quick fix. It’s not going to be eight players in or 10 players in in one transfer window, we’ve had one proper transfer window, in the summer, because the Januarys are difficult, but we are still trying to do something now.

“I’m going to stick to what I’ve been entrusted to do by the club hopefully that will be good enough and they can see what we’re doing is right. All my conversations with the club have been positive. We can’t react to all the noise.”
