Man’s body pulled from River Irwell
POLICE SAY DEATH IS ‘UNEXPLAINED’ AFTER PASSERBY RAISES ALARM WHEN HE SPOTS THE BODY ON AN ISLET NEAR BRIDGE
A MAN’S body has been recovered from the River Irwell by emergency crews.
Police were called to reports of a body in the water near to Peel Street, in Radcliffe, at around 9am yesterday.
A witness called police after discovering the body on an ‘island.’
Crews then recovered a man’s body from the water.
Shop worker John Vernon said he came across the body yesterday morning.
He said: “I was going to the shop to get milk and I saw it on the gravel island in the middle of the river.
“I called the police and they taped off the road while the body was removed.
“It’s really sad.”
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 9am this morning to reports of a person in the River Irwell near Church Street, in Radcliffe.
“Crews from Whitefield and Bury have attended along with the Technical Rescue Unit.
“Firefighters assisted police. We were there for about an hour.”
Greater Manchester Police said his death is currently being treated as unexplained.
A GMP spokesman said: “Shortly before 9am this morning (Friday 31 January 2020), police were called to reports of a body in the River Irwell near Peel Street, Radcliffe.
“Emergency services are in attendance the body of a man has been recovered from the water.
“His death is currently being treated as unexplained. A number of road closures are in place and members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.”
GMP are appealing for witnesses or anyone with further information to get in touch.
