Vogue brings supermodel home

KAREN BACK IN GREATER MANCHESTER TO GIVE FASHION BIBLE A TOUR

- By DAISY JACKSON

IT’S not every day you see a chippy in Greater Manchester getting attention from fashion bible Vogue.

Supermodel Karen Elson, who was born and grew up in Oldham, took a trip back to her hometown with Vogue for their Supermodel Roots series.

As well as visiting Farrell’s chippy in Chadderton, she went to the Bull’s Head pub in Spring Hill and took a walk around Dovestones National Park.

The short film opens with Karen, who has walked runways for the likes of Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Marc Jacobs, tucking into a bacon and egg sandwich and a mug of tea at Farrell’s, on Hollinwood Avenue.

Karen has appeared on the covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Marie Claire, as well as being chosen to walk in the London Olympics closing ceremony.

“What are we doing in Oldham?!” she says in the introduction. “I guess we’re going back to my roots, right? Retracing a lot of my footsteps from when I was young.”

Although she now lives in Nashville, the world-famous model was born and raised in Oldham, attending North Chadderton School before leaving Oldham at the age of 16 to pursue her modelling career.

The camera crew also took a trip to the Northern Quarter, with glimpses of Yard & Coop, Vinyl Resting Place, and Boss Model Management’s offices.

The film concludes back at Dovestones. Elson says: “It was a dream to come from ‘up north’ and be not just the person flipping through the magazine, I am in the magazine!”
