TONIGHT Comedy / Jamali Maddix

-

It’s said stand-up comics require a thick skin in order to succeed. With that in mind, young British comic Jamali Maddix must surely be destined for a long and prosperous career in his profession.

Born and raised in Essex, Maddix first came to global attention with his popular Viceland documentary series Hate Thy Neighbour. Placing himself right in the firing line, the series saw Maddix travelling all over the world meeting far-right extremist groups including

American Neo-Nazis and the English Defence League.

Often uncomfortable viewing, the programme firmly established Maddix – a mixed-race man with Italian and Jamaican heritage – as a comedy hero who could confront bigotry with bravery and candour.

Maddix’s eagerness to confront the ugliness of society is, it’s safe to say, clearly evident in his stand-up career. A winner of the 2014 Chortle Student Comedian of the Award, the 28-year-old tackles a variety of heavy subjects, from Islamophobia to sexism to global

politics, with acerbic humour and tight, punchy delivery. It’s no surprise to learn that he cites Bill Hicks as his all-time comedy hero – you can certainly see traces of the American comedy icon’s righteous anger in Maddix’s stand-up.

One week on from the UK’s exit from the EU, Maddix will surely have plenty to get off his chest as his latest tour, Strip Club Einstein, arrives at Manchester’s Dancehouse Theatre.
