Man is jailed 50 years after he raped girl, six

-

A MAN has been jailed for the historic rape of a six-year-old girl who he had been babysitting as a teenager.

Thomas Nulty was a teenager when he sexually assaulted the child as she slept in her bed.

His horrific crime went unpunished for nearly fifty years after he told her he would kill her mother if she told anyone what happened.

Now 64, Nulty, from Oldham, has been locked up for seven and a half years after his traumatised victim reported him to police.

Following a trial at Liverpool Crown Court, Nulty was convicted of rape. He was also jailed for five offences of sexual assault, involving the abuse of two other children, an eight-year-old boy and another six-year-old girl.

Nulty, of Huddersfield Road, had previously been jailed for five years in 1995 for indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl and a young woman.

His earlier crimes were only bought to light when his victim, now an adult, reported him to the police in April 2018.

Nulty has been bought up in care homes across Merseyside and was abused as a young boy, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

His offending took place during the early 1970s in Merseyside.

John Williams, prosecuting, said that as well as raping the victim he had also indecently assaulted her on a different occasion.

In a moving impact statement she told how she took overdoses as a child and again tried to kill herself when in her teens. She said she had always felt ‘isolated and alone’.

Jailing Nulty for seven and a half years, Judge Gary Woodhall said Nulty, a father-of-three, ‘had shown little empathy or remorse and you admitted having been sexually aroused by the power it gave you’.

Nulty was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
