New signings key to top four - Scholes
PAUL Scholes insists United can’t be ruled out of the race to qualify for the Champions League this season, whether City win their appeal against UEFA or not.
United have struggled for consistency in the Premier League this season and are six points off fourthplace Chelsea, who they face tomorrow.
They may only need to finish fifth to secure a Champions League place if City’s European ban is upheld.
But the January arrivals on Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo could be key to United finishing in the top four anyway, says Scholes.
“I think it will be close,” the United legend said. “That fourth place is still up for grabs with Chelsea, Tottenham, possibly Arsenal, Wolves, Sheffield
United - I’m not sure you can rule them out. I don’t know, I really don’t.
“It’s going to be tight right until the end of the season.
“I was encouraged by Fernandes’ attitude in that first game, and he looks like he’s got a goal in him and an assist.
“I don’t think Ighalo is a signing for the long-term. He’s had a really good spell at Watford and then gone over to China.
“His record in China is very good but is it that credible? I don’t know.
“One thing with Ighalo is he’s an out-and-out centre-forward. I don’t think United have one, they more have wide players/centre-forward. He is one and will play with his back to goal which none of the forwards at United can really do, and he might bring other players into play. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of impact he has.”
