Little litter heroes’ bid for dream Disney trip

- By ELLY BLAKE

A FAMILY have been filling up bags of rubbish in their local area in the hope of winning a once in a lifetime holiday to Disneyland.

Along with their mum, Beki Crier, 30, the siblings came up with the idea of making billboards and litter picking around the Hag Fold estate in atherton after watching Saturday Night Takeaway.

But Beki says what started out as a wish to bag ‘a place on the plane’ has turned into a fun hobby for the children, who want to set an example to others and have ‘a nice area to play in.’

They have now been litter picking twice in a week after school and have no plans to stop.

Beki said: “My boy Lathan especially loves cleaning up the litter. He keeps on saying ‘the world is not trash.’ It’s a good example to set with him being so young. And it’s something to encourage, especially if other children see it and join in.”

According to Beki, there is a big litter problem around where she lives and ‘whenever people are walking past, they are just throwing whatever rubbish they have.’

“We litter picked in a field the other day, it wasn’t very big but it was covered in rubbish and when we finished it looked great. It made such a big difference.”

Lathan, Chloe and Melissa are most concerned about plastic bottles and now tell their friends about recycling.

They also asked their mum to stop buying plastic straws after finding out about the effect it has on sea animals, such as turtles. Now the family buys paper straws.

The ITV competition gives 300 prize winners the opportunity to go to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando on April 4, where Ant and Dec will broadcast the show’s live finale. Beki added: “It would mean the world to them, the only thing they’ve ever wanted to do is go to Disneyland. Lathan absolutely loves Mickey Mouse and the girls love the princesses.

“Everyone talks about the magic, but I want them to experience it.”
