Boss full of praise for squad after win

- By DAVE CROWTHER-GREEN

SALFORD boss Graham Alexander praised his entire squad following their 2-0 win at Macclesfield Town

First-half strikes from Ashley Hunter and Richie Towell helped the Ammies to victory at Moss Rose and saw them stretch their unbeaten run away from home in League Two to six games.

“I’m pleased with the squad this week, it’s not about just the team. We’ve got a squad now that is beginning to settle and when we go into a game we know we’ve got more than 11 good players to pick from,” said Alexander.

“We’re going to need every single one of them from now to the end of the season to try and win as many games.”

There were limited chances for both sides early into the first half before Salford took the lead on 29 minutes, as Hunter saw his cross-cum-shot fly into the top right corner from just outside the area. And it was seven minutes later when Towell skipped past two Macclesfield defenders and slotted the ball under goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell.

The hosts nearly pulled one back when Oscar Threlkeld connected with Joe Ironside’s cross on 59 minutes, but the Salford defender’s wayward clearance clattered against the post.

Forward James Wilson could have then made it three late on, but his shot from the edge of the area was deflected wide of the far post.

“I thought we controlled large parts of the game, we tried to get the ball down as often as possible on a very difficult day for both teams with the wind,” added the Salford boss. “We played some real good stuff resulting in two excellent goals and a clean sheet, it was a very good away performance.”

The result sees Salford up to 10th in the League Two table.
