Bits and Pieces
1971
MARCH 5: Rolling Stones’ front man Mick Jagger struts his stuff at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall on the band’s nine-date UK tour.
The Stones played two shows at Manchester before moving on to Coventry then Glasgow.
As well as performing classics like Brown Sugar and Honky Tonk Woman, the band included the track Wild Horses from their Sticky Fingers album due to be released in April.
1970
MARCH 8: No wonder West Bromwich Albion and England striker Jeff Astle looks dejected. His fifth-minute goal just wasn’t enough to win the League Cup final against Manchester City.
The Blues stormed back in the second half with Mike Doyle levelling the score in the 60th minute to send the match into extra time. Glyn
Pardoe then settled matters with a goal in the 102nd minute.
City went on to seal a memorable season by winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup 2-1 against Polish club Gornik Zabrze at the Prater Stadium in Vienna.
1962
MARCH 8: Princess Margaret chats to pupils during a woodwork class at the Albert Memorial School in Collyhurst.
Looking like a movie star in her fur coat and matching hat, the princess toured the school during her official visit to the city. She was welcomed by the
Lord Mayor of Manchester, Alderman Lionel Biggs.
The princess made a speech from the Town Hall stage before signing the city’s visitor’s book.
Three months after coming to Manchester, Margaret and her husband Anthony Armstrong Jones represented the Crown at Jamaica’s independence ceremonies.
