City has star role again as setting for TV drama

NETLX SERIES FILMED ON HISTORIC COBBLES

- By EMILY HEWARD

MANCHESTER has been transformed into a TV set again for new Netflix series The Irregulars.

Castlefield is being transported back to Victorian times for the Sherlock Holmes spin-off.

The cobbles under the railway bridge were filled with smoke and water hoses were also used to create a misty, drizzly atmosphere.

The drama is inspired by the Baker Street Irregulars, a gang of street urchins who helped Holmes solve mysteries in Arthur Conan Doyle’s books.

Written by Tom Bidwell, whose previous work includes My Mad Fat Diary, this new interpretation sees Holmes portrayed as a delinquent drug addict who takes all the credit for their crime-cracking skills.

Two of the characters can be seen helping another, who appears injured, along the cobbles in a scene being filmed this afternoon.

Henry Lloyd-Hughes (Killing Eve, The Inbetweeners) stars as Sherlock, alongside Royce Pierreson (Line of Duty, Our Girl) as Doctor Watson.

The cast also includes Clarke Peters, Thaddea Graham, Darci Shaw, Jojo Macari, McKell David, Sheila Atim and Harrison Osterfield.

Produced by Drama Republic, the Netflix Original series has also been filming in Liverpool, Chester and north Wales in recent months.

Filming is expected to continue until May across a number of locations.

It’s the latest TV show to land in Manchester, with Netflix’s The Stranger and The Crown, the BBC’s World on Fire and Peaky Blinders and Sky One’s Intergalactic among the series that have used the city as their backdrop.

Channel 4 dating show First Dates has also moved to Manchester, beginning filming at Spinningfields restaurant The Refinery last week .
