Gundogan urges stopper to keep Ed up after mistakes

- By STUART BRENNAN

EDERSON was inconsolable after his mistakes handed United victory in the Old Trafford derby.

The City keeper came up with two howlers to hand goals to Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay as the Reds chalked up their first league double over the Blues for a decade.

The Brazil keeper allowed Martial’s tame shot to slip under his hand in the first half, and then threw a slippery ball straight to McTominay as the game moved into injury time, with the United midfielder firing it straight back past him into an empty net.

He almost gifted another goal to Martial by allowing a backpass to run under his foot, just managing to recover and clear the ball as the striker tried to force the ball over the line.

Ederson was furious with himself in the dressing room afterwards, despite attempts by team-mates to reassure him.

Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan had some soothing words for the 26-year-old, and made the point that everyone makes errors - but they are more likely to be fatal for goalkeepers

He said: “It’s normal. At the end, you are a human being. Even though we are at the top level, we all make mistakes. We play the game, and mistakes are part of the game.

“Eddy has been crucial in so many games for us, and he is allowed to make mistakes. Unfortunately this time they were punished, very crucially for us.

“It’s normal - we win together and lose together. That’s why we play football, that’s why we’re a team.”

Now the keeper has to get his mind straight for important games coming up, not least next Tuesday’s

Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid, when a repeat performance could end City’s ambitions of landing the biggest European prize. Gundogan had no doubts he will bounce back, saying: “He will deal with that situation very well. He’s angry, disappointed and frustrated, but it’s always about how you get out of it.

“He has all of our support and I’m sure he will do much better in the next games.

“I feel like this game is always big, one of the biggest derbies in the world.

“That’s why we wanted to perform and play well.

“But we still have some very important games, big games. We play Arsenal now, and Burnley, and then obviously a vital game against Madrid at home and then another crucial game in the FA Cup.

“So we still have the possibility to win silverware, so we will try to achieve that and do better than we did on Sunday.”
