Date set for Cup clash at Norwich

- By DOMINIC BOOTH

UNITED were due to host Sheffield United on March 22, though the two clubs’ FA Cup quarter-final involvement has put pay to those plans.

The Reds’ reward for beating Derby County in the FA Cup last 16 is an away tie at Norwich City, which will be now be played on that Sunday (4.30pm).

It means there is no confirmed date for United’s meeting with the Blades at Old Trafford - a fixture that could prove pivotal to both teams Champions League qualification hopes.

The Premier League have indicated to M.E.N. Sport two free dates to play the game would be the midweek gaps on April 22 or May 13, both Wednesday nights.

But it could be played sooner if United are out of the Europa League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side take on Austrian outfit LASK over two legs, the first on Thursday and second leg on March 19. If they progress, quarter-finals will be scheduled for April 9 and 16. Europa League semi-finals are April 30 and May 7 and the final in Gdansk is on May 27.

So if United stay in Europe and both they and Sheffield United progress to the FA Cup semi-finals, there could be more fixture disruption. The semifinals will be played on April 18 or 19, with United set to play Aston Villa in the Premier League that weekend and Chris Wilder’s men host Wolves.

There are no other free dates, with an international break in the final week of March.

A further complication could be if games are cancelled or rearranged due to Coronavirus fears.
