We’ll maintain high standards, says Shaw
LUKE Shaw believes the United dressing room are now in a position to maintain the standards set during a 10-game unbeaten run, having learnt from the way their season fell apart a year ago.
Just over a year after victory over Paris Saint-Germain made it 14 wins in 17 games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United secured their biggest win since then, beating City 2-0 to claim a first league double in the derby in a decade.
This unbeaten run is the longest since United went the first 11 games of
Solskjaer’s caretaker reign unbeaten between December 2018 and February 2019.
That ended with an Old Trafford defeat to PSG, but United made amends with an astonishing second leg comeback. But that proved to be the end of the honeymoon period rather than the start of something, with Shaw insisting United are on a more secure footing now.
“I think back then emotions got over us too much and I think we didn’t maintain that, and I think this time we’re in a different sort of position,” the defender said.
“We’re probably more experienced to it now because it was very disappointing the way we dropped off. We need to keep the standards high.
“I’m sure the boss and the coaches around us will keep pushing, but also us as players we need to push each other every day to get to where we want to be.
“I have no doubt that we can finish off the season really strong.” It could yet be a memorable season for United.
“We’re still in two cup competitions and the top four is still very much alive,” said Shaw. “We’ve got to keep putting the pressure on. We’ve got to try not to focus too much on other teams. We know this is the Premier League, every game is tough, and I think teams will be dropping points, but we need to just focus on us, focus on our results and the confidence is so high.
“We’re keeping clean sheets, which is a very good positive, so we need to keep going.”
