WILD CUBA: A CARIBBEAN JOURNEY
BBC2, 8.30PM
WILDLIFE cameraman Colin StaffordJohnson is obsessed with Cuba, and by the end of this two-parter you may well want to visit.
“Cuba is the Caribbean’s most precious natural jewel,” he says. “Its extraordinary history has created a true wildlife wonderland.”
There are some stunning scenes in this second part. A Cuban turtle digs a hole in the sand in the dead of night, ready to hatch her eggs.
She buries them and covers over the hole, hoping that one day the little turtles will hatch and make their way to the ocean – she will never meet her offspring.
Elsewhere, there’s a fierce battle as the lazy West Indian woodpecker can’t be bothered to drill its own nest, so heads for one that already houses some Cuban green woodpeckers.
There’s also a view of an amazing underwater world, with endless fish, sponges and urchins.
And watch out for tense scenes as a Cuban croc hunts its prey.
