Hosea’s Golden Contract bid is on hold
HOSEA Burton’s crack at winning the Golden Contract will have to wait until later this year as all boxing in Britain has been shut down until next month due to the spread of coronavirus.
The Manchester light-heavyweight was due to discover yesterday at the draw who he would face in the semifinals at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Friday night.
But the bill has now been postponed, while Matchroom also announced the cancellation of all their shows in March and April.
At the moment, the Manchester Arena bill on May 2 involving Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin is set to go ahead, but is subject to change.
“Throughout the build-up, the interests of the fighters were at the forefronts of both our minds and our efforts to go ahead in the knowledge each and every pay-day is important for them and the families they provide for,” read a statement from MTK Global who run the Golden Contract tournament.
“The ongoing pandemic in the UK means that the full weight of medical care must be thrown behind the NHS and we fully support all decisions taken to ensure people get the best advice, treatment and care as soon as possible.
“The #GoldenContract lightheavyweight semi-finals will take place at a later date and we look forward to bringing big-time boxing back to as many venues and as many TV screens as quickly as we can.”
Burton, cousin of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, is joined by Liam Conroy, Ricards Bolotniks and Serge Michel in the semi-finals.
