Aces chiefs are forced to cancel memorial race event

- SPEEDWAY By CHRIS OSTICK

SATURDAY’S star-studded season-opening Peter Craven Memorial meeting due to be held at Belle Vue’s National Speedway Centre, has been cancelled.

British Speedway’s Board of Directors have delayed the start of the 2020 season until April 15 due to the increasing measures to counteract the Covid-19 outbreak.

Aces legend Jason Crump was among a number of big-names set to return for the traditional curtain raiser.

The Aces were then due to start their competitive season at home to Sheffield on March 30 in the Premiership Supporters Club.

That fixture, however, has now been cancelled.

If they league does resume on April 15, Belle Vue’s first fixture is set to be at home to Swindon on April 20 in the Premiership.

“Our key priority now is to continue to work with the Board to draw up plans for a safe resuming of fixtures,” read a Belle Vue statement.

“We are experiencing an unprecedented period in world history one in which we need to work together to stop the spread of this virus.

“Please be assured that club officials are monitoring the situation very carefully and very regularly, with the health and safety of our riders, staff, volunteers and supporters as our priority.

“Supporters who have already purchased tickets (seasons tickets, Peter Craven Memorial tickets or league meeting tickets), we assure you that these tickets we will honoured for the re-staging dates.

“We will also communicate further with our season ticket holders as the situation becomes clearer.”
