City confirm payments to casual staff

- By SIMON BAJKOWSKI

CITY have written to their casual workers confirming they will be paid until the end of the season.

With football suspended until April 30 at the earliest and no guarantees when it will return, there has been uncertainty over the income of people who work for the club on matchdays – a group of around 1,000 including stewards, ticketing support and receptionists.

The club had been criticised for not communicating with their workers earlier, with Brighton, Crystal Palace, and Wolves among the Premier

League clubs that were swifter to take action and offer support.

The scale and complexity of the operation involving the whole City Football Group has been suggested as being principally behind the length of time taken to get in touch with staff, and issues such as direct debit payments for season tickets remain outstanding.

However, a letter sent from club chief operating officer Omar Berrarda confirmed to workers they will be paid for the games that were scheduled to take place. It read: “Following the announcement from football’s governing bodies suspending the professional game, we have been working to address a range of matters across the club with the welfare of our staff at the forefront of our minds.

“Although we would have liked to provide an update to you sooner, we also felt that it was important to thoroughly explore this issue in detail.

“We can confirm that directly engaged match day casual workers will be paid in full for the fixtures they were scheduled to work, Arsenal, Burnley, or both.

“Match day casual workers will also receive a payment, based on pro-rate earning over the last three months, applied across this season’s remaining five home fixtures. The payment will be made to all directly engaged matchday casual workers who have worked for the club in the past three months.

“Please note that you will receive two separate payments for the above, one in April to include the Arsenal and Burnley fixtures, and one in May to include Real Madrid, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Norwich City. We hope that this income will provide you with a level of financial stability over the coming weeks, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the club when the season resumes.”
