Real reason pub was open – to put on community spread! Warning to drivers

BOOZER TRANSFORMED INTO MARKET FOR NHS STAFF AND VULNERABLE IN AREA

NeArly two weeks into the uK’s coronavirus lockdown, and people are still ‘driving like idiots’.

Just last week, Gmp’s chief constable ian Hopkins slammed drivers for treating the region’s largely empty roads like a ‘race track’.

but on thursday, police dealt with a number of incidents across the region. one driver was caught making a 220-mile trip from coventry to salford to pick up some £15 windows he bought on ebay.

And when he was stopped by police on the m6, officers discovered his wife in the boot because there wasn’t enough room for her to sit in the car.

the chief constable said: “i have asked for more enforcement by Greater manchester police traffic. Just because the roads are quiet, it’s not an excuse to drive like a maniac.”

A PUB that was reported to the police a number of times for ‘breaking lockdown rules’ has actually turned into a community market for vulnerable residents and NHS staff.

The Spread Eagle Pub in Bromley Cross, Bolton, was reported for supposedly ‘serving customers’ while in coronavirus lockdown.

The landlords have now cleared up the confusion, saying that they are actually working day and night to provide essential produce for those that need it most as isolation rules continue.

The pub in Hough Lane is open from Tuesday to Sunday with its first hour, 9.30am to 10.30am, dedicated to NHS staff and customers aged over 60.

Joint landlords George Campbell and Daniel Brady said: “Our pub is in the middle of the community, a lot of our residents are of the older generation. We are out at the big markets for 5.30am and we will be delivering until about 10pm.

“We are doing this not for us but for the community.” The landlords are putting social distancing measures first, with only two shoppers allowed in at any one time.

The pair are also busy carrying out home deliveries.

They aim to get customers their packages within days, with preorder slots available on Facebook.

The shop stocks all fresh items, said the landlords: “We offer fresh fruit and veg, milk, bread, eggs, cheese, pre-order butcher meat, homemade jams – all from local suppliers.

“When the market closes, we operate a delivery service for hot food as well where people in the community can order a hot meal delivered direct to their door – Sunday roasts are a particular favourite.

“We are delivering more and more to those who can’t get out and are supported by the Bromley Cross and Egerton Support

Group. A lot our customers do not feel safe at the supermarkets.

“Those visiting the market are comfortable knowing we have strict social distancing measures in place.

“We have a strict system outside and only two customers inside at once then leave via a separate exit. “We encourage a pre-order service where people can order via Facebook and collect or be delivered next day.”

The landlords say they set up their market with the help of Bolton council and the local police to make sure everything was in order.

A spokesperson for GMP Bolton North said: “We have received a number of calls in relation to the Spread Eagle Public House, Bromley Cross serving customers following lockdown.

“The staff at the pub have set up a community market. They are open from 9.30am for NHS staff and over 60s and from 10.30am for everyone.”
