POLICE have warned friends and neighbours are putting lives at risk by socialising in their back gardens during the coronavirus lockdown.

GMP say there’s been an increase in reports of ‘back garden gatherings’ with many ‘involving people from different households.’

Under the strict social distancing measures brought in by the government, people who don’t live together are not allowed to congregate, except in a limited number of circumstances.

Police officers can fine and arrest people who continuously flout the rules as they will now be considered to be breaking the law. In a statement on Facebook, Greater Manchester Police said: “We have had an increase in reports of groups of people gathering in back gardens to socialise.

“Many of these gatherings involve people from different households and are not following the government guidelines so shouldn’t be happening.

“You can spend time in your own garden along with members of your own household, but you should not be inviting other people.”

Hundreds of people have commented on the post criticising those ignoring the rules.

Kadi White said: “Some people just lack common sense!

“When the majority of people are missing their friends and family to reduce risk and death, but you still have idiots that just can’t follow simple rules.

“Makes me mad, we have had our bank holidays taken away, we’re going to work hardly seeing our families, some nurses even living away from their families. Then you have people like this.”

Topni Donnelly posted: “This pandemic will never end if people do not respect what is asked of them.”
