We are let down by those in authority

I BELIEVE that by-and-large, the British people are doing exactly what has been asked of us by the government and we are largely staying at home.

Of course, there may be a minority of exceptions to this general rule. However, I still feel that the public as a whole has been badly let down by the fact that there has been a long delay in mass testing for the coronavirus, as well as the fact that many NHS staff (who still haven’t been tested) have not even been provided with protective masks and gowns.

So that on the one hand we have the people of Britain obeying the prime minister in what he is asking us to do in order to stay safe from the spread of the coronavirus – while on the other hand, we have those in authority not getting done what is needed to keep us safe from this killer disease.

Some good will come

ONE day, hopefully soon, we shall see the end of this pandemic and life will return to normal.

Lots of people will carry on with their lives as though this was just a bad dream.

Some people will have short and long-term mental health issues. Lots of frontline NHS staff will never have experienced anything quite like what they are experiencing now and this will affect them.

Other people will have lost their jobs and this will affect them deeply. Also people will have lost loved ones and friends and that will have a traumatic effect.

There will also be a significant minority who will become inspired in different ways. They will become great leaders and politicians of the future. They will become altruistic and caring people.

When any human tragedy happens sometimes good really does come out of bad.

Get a grip and stay indoors

WHAT’S going on people? What’s it going to take?

This isn’t the flu, this is more than we have ever known. Get a grip. Stop panicking. Get a wash. Stay indoors.

Stay two metres apart when you need to shop. Please don’t panic buy – half of your purchases will end up in the bin.

Exercise by all means, indoors if possible, but a brief walk with minimal family members is advisable. Of course stay at least two metres apart from others. This is a lockdown and we should all comply.

Can anybody please tell me why flights are still coming into the country bringing in people from Spain, Italy, USA, China and God knows where else?

The people getting off these flights are allowed to go on their merry way holding a leaflet advising them to self-isolate! Unbelievable!

Is this end of Trump?

IT is my opinion that this virus will be the downfall of Donald Trump.

It won’t matter who his opponent is when the election finally takes place because in the biggest test of his presidency he has failed miserably.

His initial reaction to the virus was dismissive, which caused the infection to flourish, leading to many deaths.

The western world expects America to show leadership during a crisis but with him at the helm nobody is looking in their direction now.

In a speech in January he pulled up the drawbridge by declaring everything was for America.

He stopped all flights into the States without informing European leaders beforehand.

However, his biggest embarrassment was the arrival in New York of a Russian jumbo jet full of ventilators and medical supplies.

It is difficult to comprehend the message to Americans from Trump as watching the news today people were queuing to be tested, bunched together as if they were waiting to go into a cinema. No social-distancing whatsoever.

During his press conferences he believes he is the embodiment of John Wayne and looks more ridiculous with every appearance.

The might of America’s armed forces cannot defeat this enemy. This is real life, not a film.
