Quiet streets lead to rise in roadworks

A ‘CONTROLLING and abusive’ thug subjected the mother of his child to a sickening attack after they met up to go shopping for baby clothes.

Bully Mohammed Malik ‘lost control’ as he questioned whether he was the child’s father. He was arrested following a ‘five-hour manhunt.’

The 24-year-old parked up outside Mothercare in Cheetham Hill on December 1 before accusing the woman of speaking to other men. An argument started and she tried to get out of the car.

Malik shoved her into the footwell and bit her leg, leaving a ‘prominent mark,’ Manchester Crown Court heard. He poured a fizzy drink over her face and forced his fingers down her throat, making her vomit.

Malik dragged the woman into a flat and put her in the bath, before threatening to make her eat a used toilet brush. Eventually, he let her go.

As Malik left, he was arrested. The woman had earlier called 999, leaving the line open.

Malik, from Whalley Range, was jailed for 27 months after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, breach of a non-molestation order and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

In a statement read in court, the woman said: “When I was in a relationship with him, I was scared of his mood swings and I am fearful of living alone as I picture that he will turn

MAJOR roadworks are being ramped up across Manchester with traffic levels plummeting by more than two thirds during the coronavirus pandemic.

It is ‘business as usual’ for the council highways teams who have taken advantage of the quieter roads by filling potholes and fixing pavements.

“I felt like I wanted to kill myself and he used to tell me that nobody liked me so I should just end it. Every day, I take a new step to becoming stronger. This has scarred me for life.”

A judge said Malik’s behaviour was ‘inexcusable.’

Prosecutor Kate Hammond said the couple were in a casual relationship from early last year to September 19, when the woman was granted a non-molestation order.

That order banned Malik from contacting the woman, who gave birth the month before the attack.

Work is progressing on larger infrastructure projects including the £9.1m revamp of Great Ancoats Street and the new £13m Chorlton Cycleway.

The council says it is pressing on with its plan to spend £100m over five years repairing the worst roads in every ward in Manchester.

Work is ongoing on the following routes: Princess Street (city centre); Kingsway (Burnage); Wilmslow Road (Rusholme); Crumpsall Lane (Crumpsall) and roads near Heaton Park and Manchester Airport.

New puffin and zebra crossings are also being installed outside schools while children remain at home.
