Sheriff joins volunteer effort

-

THE new High Sheriff of Greater Manchester is supporting community leaders helping the needy during the coronavirus emergency.

Eamonn O’Neal, who took up office last month, has seen at first hand the work done by Trafford mayor, Rob Chilton, who helps co-ordinate a 32-strong volunteer workforce distributing parcels from food banks and dealing with other requests for support.

Coun Chilton, who volunteers for four hours each day, said: “I’m not doing any ceremonial engagements at the moment so I’m delighted to join volunteers running this vital service. We help people of all ages though mostly the elderly, disabled and anyone who feels vulnerable and it might even be that someone feels lonely and just wants to have a chat.”

Meanwhile, Victoria Harper, work and skills lead at Manchester council, is leading a team of colleagues and volunteers at the hastily-created Manchester Food Distribution Centre, based at New Smithfield Market.

Ms Harper said: “We are helping to feed thousands of people every day and I am so impressed that this team of people are getting on with it quietly, with no fuss and without expecting to be praised for what they’re doing.”

Mr O’Neal said: “I am constantly touched by the selfless determination and commitment of the people of Greater Manchester and I’m determined to us the office of High Sheriff to offer as much support as possible and to share the inspirational stories far and wide.”
