Anguish as Naomi dies after VE party

- By REBECCA DAY

A FAMILY has been left devastated after a 31-year-old woman died in her sleep just hours after a VE Day street party.

Naomi Derrig, who had type 1 diabetes, had been complaining of migraines in the days leading up to her death.

But she spent Friday with her family and was ‘glowing’ during the VE Day street party in Denton, Tameside, her heartbroken sister said.

She went to bed after chatting to her boyfriend on the phone, but a few hours later was found unresponsive in bed by mum Lynda Derrig.

Her son Jordan rang an ambulance and paramedics spent 20 minutes trying to revive her.

“But they couldn’t do any more. Her body just couldn’t take it anymore,” her heartbroken sister Nikita Derrig said.

She passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It’s fresh heartache for the family - Naomi’s brother Billy took his own life ten years ago.

“My mum and dad shouldn’t have to bury two children. They are still not over Billy,” said Nikita. “Nobody had a bad word to say about either of them. They were both so lovely and so loved.”

Naomi had four siblings Jordan, Nikita, Gavin and Billy, and was a loving auntie. She was daughter to Lynda and Michael

Derrig and step-daughter to Julie.

She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18.

Naomi had low blood pressure, meaning she would often collapse.

She had worked at B&M Bargains but she had to quit in the months leading up to her death due to health problems.

A post-mortem examination will be held to determine what caused her death.

“She had not been well,” her sister Nikita said.

“But the day before she died she was glowing. She looked so beautiful. I’m so glad I had that day with her.”

A fundraising page has been set up to help the family pay for Naomi’s funeral.
