‘Why would Sane want to leave?’

- By SIMON BAJKOWSKI

FORMER Bayern Munich and City midfielder Owen Hargreaves has questioned Leroy Sane’s reasons for wanting to leave the Blues.

After joining the club four years ago, the German looks to be close to an exit as Bayern Munich chase his signature again.

The Bundesliga giants thought they had their man 12 months ago but a deal could not be agreed in time and the player then suffered a serious injury in August.

As Bayern return, City will not keep him, but that doesn’t mean they will sell him on the cheap. The suggestion of a £35m offer from Bavaria has already been laughed at, with the Blues wanting £135m last summer.

Hargreaves knows the appeal of both clubs, having spent time in Munich and Manchester during his playing career. He can see why Bayern would be a draw, but questions why a player that wants to be the best he can would not want to continue working with the best manager in the game.

“If he wants to go back home and has the opportunity to play for the biggest team in Germany, then I can understand that,” Hargreaves said.

“But to leave City and the football they play under Pep Guardiola is a tough choice. Football-wise, it doesn’t get much better than City. I think Leroy wants to be the best - and if you have the best manager in the game then that makes it a tough decision.

“I remember Leroy saying the detail Pep gives you is something else. He will tell you to stand a yard or two from where you normally stand when the ball is on the other side of the pitch.

“His attention to detail is off the charts. Once you’ve had a manager who gives you that, it’s hard to go backwards.”
