Wolves pull off coup to sign Inglis

- By TOM BRAMWELL

WARRINGTON have pulled off a major coup and tempted one of the all-time rugby league greats out of retirement to join the Wolves for the 2021 Betfred Super League season.

Former Queensland captain, Australia international and NRL star Greg Inglis has penned a one-year deal at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The 33-year-old initially retired from the game in April 2019, bringing an end to an illustrious career in which he’d won the Clive Churchill Medal for man of the match in an NRL Grand Final, the Golden Boot for best international player and made 263 appearances in the NRL, as well as 39 for the Kangaroos and 32 in the maroon jumper of his home state.

“I can’t wait to get over there and play for a club that has so much rich heritage,” said Inglis.

“I’ve seen the success the team have had in the Challenge Cup and I want to help the team deliver more glory.

“To get the opportunity to live in the UK, to play for such a powerhouse club that I believe is on the rise is something

I’m looking forward to and, hopefully, I can add value to the team.”

The deal has echoes of the Wolves’ sensational short-term capture of Australian great Andrew Johns in 2005.

The halfback - who would go on to be named the eighth ‘Immortal’ of southern hemisphere rugby league - played three games in primrose and blue.

“Greg is a world-class athlete and has received the highest honours within our game,” said Wire boss Steve Price.

Meanwhile, the governing body has confirmed that the Challenge Cup and 1895 Cup Finals scheduled to take place at Wembley in July have been postponed.
