Benjamin ‘can’t wait’ to get back in action for City
CITY full-back Benjamin Mendy has said he is excited to return to action when the Premier League resumes.
The coronavirus pandemic means there has been no football in England for almost three months after the suspension of fixtures in March.
There has always been a determination around the Premier League to complete the season, with some other leagues around Europe making the decision to cancel their campaigns.
Germany, however, have shown with the Bundesliga that competitions can restart.
Players here have now returned to training in phase one of ‘Project Restart’, although they are under strict social distancing guidelines.
A vote on phase two is due to take place today, with a possible start date for fixtures also close to being revealed.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, Mendy has spoken of his excitement about playing football again.
“I can’t wait,” said the
Blues ace. “We are just waiting for the green light.
“Everywhere we see we are going to start on this date and that date.
“Now I wait for the guys to text us to tell us the league is going to start at this time, and we are going to be so happy.
“But I know they are going to take all the precautions when we are back.
“It’s not like they are just going to say ‘let’s go play’, they are going to check everything and I think that’s why it takes time.”
Although the defender has missed football, he is thankful for the extra time the break has given him as he recovers from injury - and also especially over a special religious time.
“All of the people have missed football, but at this time now, for Muslim people it means I can be more focused on Ramadan,” he added.
“We don’t train, we can fast, but the mosques are closed and we can’t go out or see family at Eid. So, I have missed the football but it makes you focus on the more important things. I have tried to develop myself and learn every day.”
