‘It’s disgusting to have this on our doorstep’

RESIDENTS have voiced their ‘disgust’ at the huge pile of rubbish dumped along the Manchester Ship Canal.

Dog walkers, cyclists and runners from surrounding areas are furious over the pile of waste that has been building up at the bottom of the Cadishead Viaduct in Salford.

Salford city council say the land is owned by the Manchester Ship Canal, who have been asked by the town hall to remove the waste and increase security on the site.

Rachel Brodie, from Cadishead, is one of the residents who was shocked to find the rubbish while walking her dog last week.

She said: “Whoever’s done it has collected it from different locations and just dumped it there.

“My dad passes there more than me and he says it’s been like that since Christmas, but he hasn’t seen it as bad as that.”

The 19-year-old told the M.E.N. that she was disgusted and embarrassed at what she saw and decided to post about it on her local Facebook group.

“I was shocked but also disgusted because it isn’t just a small pile, it goes on for metres and towers up.

“Some people told me on my posts that they’d seen it on bike rides, and runs, so I don’t think I’m the first to discover it.

“It’s embarrassing as a community to know that we have something like that on our doorstep, but it also makes you wonder if this is being done by somebody in the community or not.”

Coun David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety, confirmed the land is owned by the Manchester Ship Canal company.

“We will ask them to remove the waste and increase security at the site to prevent further dumping. We have also liaised with the Port of Liverpool police who patrol the Ship Canal and land within a mile of it to increase vigilance.

“There is never any excuse for people to spoil our city by flytipping. If anyone has evidence of who is responsible please get in touch so we can bring them to justice and send a clear message that this must stop.
