Kahn casts a doubt over big money summer deal

- By JOE BRAY

BAYERN Munich director Oliver Kahn says he is sceptical Europe’s biggest clubs will be able to complete big transfers this summer - including that of Leroy Sane.

The German giants have been chasing Sane for two seasons, and have conducted a very public pursuit of the City winger in an attempt to persuade him to move to Germany.

However, in the last couple of days, former Bayern defender and interim manager Willy Sagnol said Sane wouldn’t fit in at the club, and now club director Oliver Kahn has spoken about the challenges clubs will face in the transfer market this summer.

The financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic is set to change priorities, and Kahn believes the large transfers that have been seen in recent windows will not be seen this summer.

Kahn said: “At the moment there are completely different things to be managed. If the market starts up at all, I’m rather sceptical.

“We’re looking at everything at the moment, like many European clubs. I have not found that the clubs are ready to make large transfers.”

On Sane, Kahn pointed to his long-term injury this season as reason to think twice about a big-money transfer, pointing to the winger’s contract at the Etihad, which has another year left to run.

He said: “Sane has an injury behind him, trying to find a connection bit by bit. I think it’s difficult today to talk about players who have a valid employment contract.”

It has been suggested that Bayern target Bayer Leverkusen winger Kai Havertz instead, but again Kahn would not be drawn on his side’s interest in the young German.

“Of course Havertz is a top talent, a great player, but that doesn’t mean that Bayern are interested in all these good players,” Kahn said.

“He has an ongoing contract until 2022.”
