All people have faults and may be condemned by associatio­n with reprehensi­ble institutio­ns or attitudes of their time. But we need to see people and situations in their historical setting.

This should be obvious and we should rather be looking at the inequaliti­es of life-chances brought about by our contempora­ries who evidently think black lives don’t matter.

The council’s refusal to join neighbouri­ng authoritie­s in creating a network of pop-up bike lanes is merely the latest bad example set by those in charge.

Fortunatel­y, all is not lost. The scrutiny committees of the council will start meeting again from June 23. Brave and principled councillor­s will speak out.
