Bizarre excuse of charity worker in photos shame

- By PAIGE OLDFIELD

A FORMER St John Ambulance volunteer said he purposely downloaded child abuse pictures because he wanted to go to prison and be killed by another inmate.

Darren Kelsey claimed he suffered with depression and ‘lacked the courage’ to carry out suicide.

The 54-year-old said he hoped that by downloading 1,500 indecent images of children, he would be arrested, sent to prison and murdered by other inmates.

Police found 356 category A images, 369 category B images and 749 category C images when his Salford flat was raided in June 2018.

His home was searched by officers after they received information about him distributing indecent images of children. His laptop and tablet showed he had also sent 13 images to another user on a messaging service. There were also messages containing sexual chat, the exchanging of passwords and internet searches for ‘boys in speedos.’

At Manchester Crown Court heard that when he was interviewed Kelsey claimed he had no interest in young boys.

Alison Mather, defending, said Kelsey, who lives with his long-term partner in Cross Street, had previously worked as a manager for St

John Ambulance. He had suffered with depression for six years and has been sectioned on a number of occasions due to suicide attempts.

She claims that due to ‘lacking the courage’ to go through with suicide, Kelsey downloaded the images in a bid to get arrested and go to prison.

He hoped the inmates inside would kill him.

Kelsey, 54, pleaded guilty to distributing and making indecent images of children. He was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years. He was also handed a two-year community order, 30 rehabilitation days and a sexual harm prevention order for five years.
