Joiner found dead in bed after overdose

- By THOMAS GEORGE

A JOINER was found dead in bed by his partner following a drug overdose, an inquest heard.

Adam McGreevy, 30, was discovered unresponsive at his home in Wigan just hours after finishing work ahead of the Christmas break.

An inquest into his death heard he had taken a combination of drugs and medications in the hours beforehand.

Loved ones told the hearing at Bolton Coroners Court that Mr McGreevy had been taking painkillers for several months to help relieve pain from a shoulder injury.

His girlfriend, Rachael Myers, also revealed that Mr McGreevy had complained of heart palpitations, which he feared were becoming increasingly regular. She called him ‘the love of her life’ and said they were planning to move to Australia. She said: “We were looking forward to so much. We were planning our future together, to move away and start fresh, settle down and have a family. He was so funny, smart and outgoing. He always looked out for his friends and was well loved by everyone. He was the main entertainment at parties, loved to meet new people and would do anything for anyone.”

In a statement, Ms Myers said Mr McGreevy had been to pick her up after finishing work on December 20, 2019. They went to his home, which he shared with his parents, in Landsdowne Terrace, Swinley.

Ms Myers told the hearing she was aware Mr McGreevy had taken a dose of co-codamol during the evening.

It was said that he had been taking medication for his shoulder problem, and he had struggled with anxiety and depression since the recent death of a close friend.

After a few drinks, the couple headed to bed at about 10.15pm.

But in the early hours, Ms Myers reached out to touch Mr McGreevy’s arm and found him cold and unresponsive. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Emile Salmo, a consultant histopathologist at Wigan Infirmary, gave the cause of death as ‘combined drug toxicity.’ Toxicology tests revealed traces of alcohol, codeine, flualprazolam and paracetamol.

Det Insp John Robb said police did not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances. He added that there was also no evidence to suggest he had intended to take his own life.

In a statement, Mr McGreevy’s mum, Dawn Edwardes-Dunn, explained that at 1am, shortly before her son’s death, she had heard him snoring while she went to the toilet.

She said this was unusual as she had never heard him snore before.

Coroner Alan Walsh recorded a verdict of ‘drug-related death.’
