Blues will say big farewell to Silva

- By SIMON BAJKOWSKI

DAVID Silva will see out the season with City and will return so he can have a proper send-off, according to Pep Guardiola.

The Spaniard is leaving the club this summer after a sparkling decade of service where he has established himself as one of the greatest players in the history of City and English football.

The pandemic has thrown a spanner in many football works and Silva, 34, has had to weigh-up whether to continue with the Blues beyond the expiry of his initial contract and contemplate a farewell without any fans.

Clubs have until June 23 to agree short-term deal with players that would be free agents at the end of the month and, while no announcement has been made by the Blues, Guardiola appeared to confirm Silva will stay for a little longer.

City’s manager also paid tribute to the mark Silva has left on the club and believes there will be something to mark his contribution with fans when the world returns to normality.

“He will stay until the end of the season and it is unfortunate he is going to finish his last games here without people, but he is coming back and, hopefully, he can have the big farewell with people,” said Guardiola.

“Always the big clubs become a huge, incredible club when they make these kind of big gestures to these incredible players for what they have done for more than one decade.

“David is one of them. It was Vincent Kompany, it was Joe Hart, Yaya Toure, Pablo Zabaleta. I would say more names, sorry for the guys I forget, but they know exactly what they have done to make the club what it is right now.

“The situation is what it is. No one wants it, not just for David but for everyone. When everything is returning to normal the club will make an agreement with David and do what they have to do.”
