Foden to get his chance at Blues

- By STUART BRENNAN

PHIL Foden believes he will get the City chances which will land him an England place before this season is out.

The Blues star produced an impressive 25-minute cameo, scoring the final goal in the 3-0 win over Arsenal on Wednesday.

And that was his first game since England boss Gareth Southgate has underlined his need to perform more regularly for his club if he is to get that call to the senior national squad.

There are signs that Pep Guardiola is stepping up Foden’s involvement, as David Silva’s career enters it final phase.

The 20-year-old started the Carabao Cup final win over Aston Villa, when he was man of the match, and also made his first derby start in the defeat by United in March. He is also in line for a start on Monday, when Burnley visit the Etihad Stadium.

“You could see there were a lot of changes and I think that’s going to be the way forward for the next couple of games,” said Foden after the Gunners were beaten in the first game back since lockdown started.

“Every player is going to be needed and everyone needs to be ready to come on.

“But I think our fitness levels were OK.

“I thought we pressed high and looked like the City that everyone knows.

“The boss said everyone needs to be ready because not everyone can play every game now, a full 90 minutes.

“Everyone’s needs to be ready. He’s going to rotate a lot so everyone just needs to take their chance.

“I’ll be ready for whenever I play and try and do my best.”

Foden always enjoys the support of the home fans at the Etihad Stadium, especially as he is a homegrown talent from Stockport.

And he found it strange that his goal was met with silence in the stadium, with fans not yet allowed back into games.

“It affects the game a lot,” he said. “When you’re down and the team are on the attack, you need your fans behind you to boost you again.

“It has to come from ourselves and people on the touchline, and captains and leaders talking us through the game.

“It’s going to be difficult without our fans in the next couple of games but I know we’re capable of winning and we’ve all got voices, so we need to use them.”
