- By TYRONE MARSHALL

NEMANJA Matic has backed midfield duo Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to play a key role in bringing success back to United.

The pair started together for the first time in the 3-0 win against Sheffield United on Wednesday, with Matic providing a platform behind them, and they all impressed in the victory over the Blades.

Fernandes has made a scintillating impact since his £47m move from Sporting Lisbon in January and after five-and-a-half months on the sidelines Pogba has returned in impressive fashion.

Matic was delighted to see the duo finally start together and after they played important roles in a slick display at Old Trafford, he was predicting a bright future if they continue to pull the strings together. Said the Serbian: “I am happy to see them on the pitch. They are great players and I’m sure they can bring a lot of good things for this club in the future.

“I always like to say for good players there is always space in the team and I’m sure they will give their best to help the team, to help the club. That’s the most important for me at this moment.

“They have quality like every player in our squad.

“I am happy to see them playing and, for sure, as time is going they will be better and better.”

The comfortable win on Wednesday extended United’s beaten run to 13 games. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side remain in contention for a top-four finish and are still in the FA Cup, with a quarter-final against

Norwich tomorrow, and in the Europa League.

It could yet turn out to be a successful season and Matic has his eyes on silverware.

“We will give our best to win those trophies and reach the top four, so we are preparing for that,” he said.

“We still have seven games left in the Premier League so everything is possible.”

The hero of the win over Sheffield United was Anthony Martial, who became the first United player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Robin van Persie more than seven years ago.

“Anthony played amazing ” added Matic. “I think he’s now at a good age, that he has more experience.

“He played on a high level already for many years, so I’m sure that the time in front of us he will show his capacity.

“I’m very happy for him that he scored three goals.

“It’s not easy to score three goals in any league, especially the Premier League.

“I am more than sure that this is only the first one for him.”
