1 A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT (1992)

EARLY movie role which saw the Los Angeles-born actor cast alongside Brad Pitt, Tom Skerritt and Craig Sheffer in a drama about two brothers directed by Robert Redford. Joseph has said: “My advantage is that I know the system. Big budgets don’t impress me. They might’ve done when I was 13, but I’ve been working since I was six.”

2 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU (1999)

CULT comedy based on Shakespear­e’s The Taming Of The Shrew which saw Joseph working with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. His co-star Larisa Oleynik went on to also play his love interest in hit TV comedy 3rd Rock From The Sun when he played alien Tommy Solomon who was disguised as a teen student.

3 (500) DAYS OF SUMMER (2009)

ROMANTIC comedy about young love with Zooey Deschanel playing Summer, who does not believe in relationsh­ips and happy ever after endings. The film’s publicity said: “Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t.” Joseph once said: “I’ve played the smart kid, the funny one, the nice sweet one, even the angry one, but never the sexy one.”

4 INCEPTION (2010)

DIRECTOR and writer Christophe­r Nolan’s sci-fi thriller saw Joseph as part of an inception team who infiltrate the minds of people when they are sleeping and implant false thoughts and memories. He worked with Nolan again in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.

5 LOOPER (2012)

ANOTHER thought-provoking sci-fi thriller which saw him playing an assassin called Joe (below) who finds himself tasked with killing an older version of himself, played by Bruce Willis, when he is sent back from the future. Joe says: “The only rule is never let your target escape – even if the target is you.”

6 THE WALK (2015)

BIOGRAPHIC­AL movie about French highwire expert Philippe Petit’s attempt to walk between the two World Trade Centre towers in 1974. The film was directed and co-written by Robert Zemeckis and Petit himself personally trained Joseph to walk a tightrope in just eight days.

7 SNOWDEN (2016)

ANOTHER biographic­al film directed by Oliver Stone which saw him playing CIA whistleblo­wer Edward Snowden who leaked highly confidenti­al informatio­n online. Joseph said: “I’m lucky enough, I made money on television when I was young, so I don’t have to do parts to support myself. I just do stuff because it’ll be fun and challenge me.”
