YOUNGSTERS have been left ‘really upset and angry’ after a mural they helped make at school was vandalised.

Students at St Phillip’s CE Primary School in Salford helped create the artwork as part of a class project with community groups and residents five years ago.

It aimed to bring a sense of pride in the community for students who walked passed it every day. It paid tribute to the area’s local history and featured key landmarks and historical figures.

The damage was discovered by resident Chris Chalk. He said: “I passed the mural and noticed it was damaged, took a picture and posted it online.

“It seems to have been recently damaged since it looks like there’s still debris on the pavement probably caused by some bored kids? It’s a shame to see it damaged.”

Headteacher Julia Kinch said that many of the students who worked on the mural are in their final year of primary school and have been saddened at the vandalism.

She said: “The mural was created as part of a community art project five years ago and involved pupils from the school working alongside other community groups.

“They are now in Year 6 and set to leave the school this year.

“They are really upset and angry about the damage which they now have to walk past every day. They were very proud of their work as they worked hard on the mural and felt it really added to the community.

“They feel very let down by whoever has done this,” she said.

The school now plans to team up with community groups to restore the mural.
