Mentor Matic has Scott team-mate’s McTom’s back

- By DOMINIC BOOTH

NEMANJA Matic has offered to mentor midfield team-mate Scott McTominay as he opened up on the duo’s rivalry at United.

Paul Pogba’s return to fitness and the impact of January arrival Bruno Fernandes has meant the final midfield spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has become a three-way battle between Matic, McTominay and Brazilian star Fred.

Matic would appear to be the man in possession as it stands, having performed solidly behind Pogba and Fernandes.

And now Matic has spoken to Sky Sports about McTominay’s development.

“Scott knows that I am always there for him if he needs some advice, he is still learning,” he said.

“I am happy with how he has progressed, he is improving. I’ve said already a few times that he will be a very important player for Manchester United in the future.”

Matic also gave his verdict on Fernandes, the playmaker who arrived from Sporting Lisbon in January and has been an instant hit at Old Trafford. Fernandes’ impact has surprised many people, Matic included.

“I’ve followed him for a long time because I played in the Portuguese league at Benfica,” he added.

“I knew he would bring quality for us. He played for a big club with a lot of pressure to win, but I didn’t think he would adapt so quick. From the first minute in the Premier League he made the difference.

“I’m happy for him and happy we have him in the team.

“He’s playing in the position where he needs to make the difference. He has all the ability to be the leader on the pitch.”
