We already have cycle lanes – the pavements!
I WRITE this letter in response to the letter by the whole British Cycling Squad (Viewpoints, June 29).
If I read another letter about pop-up cycle lanes I will scream. I also call on the executive member for environment, planning and transport, Angelika Stogia, to announce an urgent programme into pop-up walkways!
Cyclists in Stockport and Manchester have the best cycle lanes in the world – they are called pavements.
Pedestrians on said pavements take their lives in their hands everytime they venture out. How there are not more serious accidents is beyond me.
Step out of a shop at the wrong moment and you will get hit by some dozy cyclist.
Walk round a corner without keeping your wits about you and you can get flattened.
Heres a good one, I’m walking home when a cyclist appears in front of me. He is riding on the edge of the pavement near the road, but wait for this – his dog is running against the house fronts with the lead right across the pavement. I was like a rabbit in the headlights until he yanked the poor dog over to his side and passed. I shouted ‘I’m not in your way am I?,’ but to no avail.
I’ve not even mentioned the morons who ride down busy pavements with a phone pressed to their ear so that they only have one hand on the handlebars and brakes.
So stop moaning when you have already got the best cycling lanes. I’m glad you mentioned safe mobility because pedestrians don’t have any.
The rough cost of your lanes is £600,000, that would buy a few more meals for under-privileged kids wouldn’t it?
