James trying too hard, warns Giggs

- By DOMINIC BOOTH

RYAN Giggs believes Daniel James is trying too hard and needs to play his natural game if he’s to rediscover his form for United.

The Reds legend manages the winger at for Wales and even advised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on his transfer from Swansea City a year ago.

James’ United career began in fine style as his scored three goals in his first four appearances, though he’s only managed one strike since - and has lost his place to Mason Greenwood.

Giggs believes the 22-year-old still has the talent and raw materials to succeed at Old Trafford.

“He came in and scored on his home debut against Chelsea and did really well, but it’s not easy when everyone is behind the ball,” Giggs said.

“Then what happens is you try too hard and you don’t have your natural game. He is still young because he’s only really had one season at Swansea. He’d been on loan moves to Shrewsbury.

“He is definitely a player that will get better because he wants to get better, he’s a great lad.

“Even if he’s not having a really great game he’s always putting the opposition on the back foot because they know what he’s capable of [with his speed].”

Giggs also confirmed that role he played in James’ big move to United in June 2019.

“Ole was the one that came to me, it wasn’t the other way [around],” said Giggs. “Ole knew about him and the club had been watching him. It was a no-brainer. He’s like that [on an upward trajectory] in his career. He’s a great lad as well, he wants to get better.”
