Throughout the pandemic, travellers have been asked not to make their way to tourist destinations to maintain social distancing and avoid traffic chaos.

But workers in Cumbria say that has not stopped people making the trip up or leaving their rubbish behind - and many of them have made the trip from places in Greater Manchester.

Caroline Holden is a land agent for United Utilities. It’s her job to help manage the land surrounding the reservoirs in the Lake District, speaking to local businesses and protecting the water from pollution.

Since the lockdown began, she says

A YOUNG mum said she feels ‘broken and empty’ following the death of her 13-month-old daughter.

Hannah Thomas discovered that her daughter Luna Ellora had vomit on her face after checking on her in her cot at their Harrowby Street home, in Farnworth, Bolton.

After cleaning Luna up, Ms Thomas, 24, slept with her for a short while before returning Luna to the cot.

The next time Ms Thomas checked on her daughter, she was unresponsive.

Ms Thomas, who is also mother the numbers of visitors to the area have soared and that many of them tell her they have travelled from Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

“The reason I do this job is because I love the outdoors,” Caroline said. “I’m a custodian of this landscape and I’m proud to work for a firm that genuinely cares for the environment and provides such an essential service for society.

“But it breaks my heart to see the way the countryside is being treated.

“Bottles are deliberately smashed down by the lake shore, the broken glass is a hazard for dog walkers. Some people chop down a few trees to make a campfire. These are the trees that we have been planting over the decades to help restore the natural beauty of the valley”. to a five-year-old girl and a sevenyear-old boy, described Luna as a “funny, clever and beautiful little girl”.

“She was one of a kind,” Ms Thomas said.

“She was always laughing and even when she was crying you’d look at her and she would burst out with her cheesy grin.

“She was such a funny, clever and beautiful little girl.

“Food was her life, she was only happy when she was eating.

“Every time you saw her, she had either food in her hand or around her mouth.

“She was such a big character, taken away way too soon.

“She is missed and loved by many.”

An inquest into Luna’s death has opened at Bolton Coroner’s Court. Assistant coroner for Manchester West, Stephen Teasdale, confirmed that Luna died at home, on March 27.

The provisional cause of death has been recorded as an ‘invasive and hemolytic’ group A streptococcal infection.

Ms Thomas said that her daughter’s sudden death has left her feeling ‘broken and empty.’

She added: “She was my baby and to have that ripped away from you is such a horrible feeling. Words can’t even describe how it makes me feel.”

The inquest has been adjourned, with a review taking place on August 14 to determine whether it can be listed at that time.
