Suspect, 39, arrested in Aya murder probe

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of student Aya Hachem.

Police said the 39-year-old man, from Bury, was detained on Thursday. He was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Lancashire Police said the man has now been released under investigat­ion pending further enquiries after questionin­g.

Aya, 19, who was studying law at the University of Salford and had just sat her second year exams, died from a gunshot wound to the chest in Blackburn on Sunday, May 17. She was shopping close to the Lidl supermarke­t on King Street in the town at the time.

A 33-year-old man from Manchester meanwhile, who was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of assisting an offender, has also been released under investigat­ion pending further enquiries, Lancashire Police said in a statement yesterday.

Police have made a total of 22 arrests in connection with Aya’s death.

Seven people have been charged with Aya’s murder and attempted murder.
