Domestic violence brute hit policeman

- By AMY WALKER

A MAN was given a dressing down in court after he drunkenly attacked his partner and a police officer.

His partner was speaking to police outside their home about a ‘domestic related incident’ on July 8 when they spotted she had a bad cut to her eye.

Although admitting it was her partner Louis Evans, 26, who assaulted her, the woman refused to give a statement. Their 16-month-old son was said to be in the house at the time, Manchester magistrates court heard.

As officers began to speak to Evans he ‘verbally abused’ one and punched him to the face. The officer was left with reddening, bruising and swelling to the cheek.

The court heard that other officers had to spray tear gas in Evans’s face in order to restrain him.

He pleaded guilty to common assault of an emergency worker and assault and was sentenced to 16 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

Avisha Gulhati, defending, said ‘he is mortified by his behaviour and very ashamed,’ and added: “He doesn’t know what led to the argument and assault on his partner, due to the fact he was drinking and having cocaine.”

Evans, of Birchenall Street, Moston, was also ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activity requirements, a Domestic Abuse Help course and 100 hours unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £200 compensation to the police officer as well as £213 court costs.

District Judge Joanne Hirst asked him: “Did you see any domestic violence as a child? Your own son will remember this, just like you did. There was a child present, even if they were not in the same room, it always makes the offence more serious. Children always know when they are in an unsafe environment and they always remember it. This is me saying you should be serving a four-month sentence – but I am giving you one chance.”
