Broadband and mobiles ‘held up well’ in lockdown

He added: “Everyone needs to understand that on the estate it was a controlled environmen­t. Anyone that tried to do a burnout or wheelie was sent out immediatel­y. It was not that kind of event, but I know I have got a lot of apologisin­g to do.”

BROADBAND and mobile networks generally ‘held up well’ during lockdown but further highlighte­d the digital divide in Britain, MPs have been told.

Members of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee heard that those without reliable broadband of mobile signal were left isolated during lockdown.

Richard Piggin, of consumer group Which?, said around 30 per cent of people surveyed by the group had connection­s which did not meet their needs during the coronaviru­s pandemic, cutting them off from vital day-to-day services such as shopping and banking, which moved online during lockdown. He was giving evidence to the committee as part of its inquiry into the future of digital technology and the impact of Covid-19.
