Ammies swoop to boost defence

- BY CHARLIE GREGORY

SALFORD City have moved to strengthen the heart of their defence with the acquisition of former Northampton Town centreback Jordan Turnbull on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old, who helped the Cobblers to promotion after featuring for the full 90 minutes in their victorious League Two play-off final last month, has penned a two-year contract in Greater Manchester.

Upon the expiry of his contract at the Sixfields Stadium, the ex-England youth international has opted to join the Ammies ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and is now looking to replicate his recent success in the fourth tier with his new side.

Turnbull said: “I’m very excited to be here, I’m happy it’s all sorted now. It’s been something that’s happened quite quickly but I’m excited for what’s to come.

“We had a brilliant season last season, I managed to play a lot of games and it was a great experience; my first promotion on my CV and I’m looking to get many more and that’s one of the big reasons for coming to this football club.”

The versatile defender, who scored against Salford in a 2-0 win at Northampton in October, made 42 appearances in all competitions for Keith Curle’s side, culminating in a 4-0 victory versus Exeter City at Wembley Stadium and promotion to League One.

He added: “The vibe around Salford City at the moment is very exciting. When speaking to the manager the main topic was promotion; it’s what everyone wants and is working towards so it’s definitely one of the main reasons I want to come and play at this football club.”

Ammies’ boss Graham Alexander echoed his new recruit’s lofty ambitions, admitting that the club are only pursuing players of a specific ilk as he attempts to assemble a squad fit to challenge for promotion next season.

The Scotsman said: “We’re looking for a certain profile of player to come in, and he fits all those categories. After meeting him last week, he seemed really excited about joining the club straight away. We saw a real desire from him and vice versa with us.

“He’s just come out of a promotion-winning team from this division. What we’re looking at are players from higher levels, promotion winners or captains, and that’s the profile we set out a few months ago to bring on board, and we’re delighted to get Jordan’s services.”
