Bleach-attack brute warned wife he would ‘wreck her life’

HUSBAND JAILED FOR TERRIFYING ASSAULT SENT THREATENING LETTER FROM PRISON

- By ANDREW BARDSLEY

A THUG who poured bleach on his wife during a violent assault has been jailed.

Adam Wood, 28, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, following the incident at the home he shared with his wife Sarah in Stretford.

Months after he had been remanded in custody, Wood sent a threatening letter to her from prison warning he’d ‘wreck her life.’

The couple started a relationship last year and later married.

But a court heard it ‘quickly became abusive.’

In the early hours of February 4, the couple were in bed when Wood started ‘ranting’ and calling his wife abusive names after complaining she hadn’t given him a kiss.

He began to repeatedly punch her, then threw a shelf which hit her on the shoulder.

Wood also threw glass picture frames at her, and bit her arm.

Shortly after, he returned with a bottle of bleach and poured some of it, with some splashing onto her.

She tried to barricade the door to get away from him, but Wood then dragged her into the living room, and punched her again.

Then he poured the bleach over her head, Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

“It is very fortunate she wasn’t seriously burnt,” Judge Maurice Greene said.

The police were called by a neighbour, and officers noted a strong smell of bleach.

Wood ran away, but not before taking bank cards and a set of keys belonging to Mrs Wood.

She suffered cuts and bruises during the incident, but was not more seriously hurt. Wood was caught soon

after.

While being interviewed by the police, Wood claimed his wife had been the aggressor.

Then in July, while Wood remained in prison awaiting the outcome of the case, he sent a ‘threatening’ letter to his wife, in which he called her a ‘druggy’ and a ‘s***.’

In the letter, Wood, said he was going to ‘wreck her life’ and made other ‘extremely unpleasant’ remarks.

The judge was told that Wood had undergone a domestic violence course in prison.

“It doesn’t appear to have worked,” Judge Greene said. As well as sending Wood to jail, he passed a restraining order banning him from contacting his wife for the next five years.

But speaking to the M.E.N. after the hearing, Mrs Wood, 36, said she fears what may happen when her husband is released.

“I know he is coming straight for me,” she said. “He is going to come and finish me off. He has said that from day one.”

In a statement read to the court by prosecutor Helen Longworth, she described her husband as having a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ character.

Defending Wood, who has 25 previous convictions, Daniel Calder said the defendant has demonstrated an intention to ‘better himself’ and make a ‘fresh start’ when he is released.

Mr Calder said Wood has suffered from mental health problems, and has undergone drug and alcohol courses in prison. Wood pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He is going to come a finish me off. He has said that from day one Sarah Wood
