Berba in call for defenders as well as Sancho

- By DOMINIC BOOTH

IGHALO sees every opportunity to play for United as the realisation of a boyhood dream but during Project Restart it’s become clear he is very much a back-up striker.

He’s a certainty to start against LASK on Wednesday and another goalscoring show could earn him further opportunities when the competition moves to Germany.

■ MASON GREENWOOD

THE 18-year-old is a player with nothing to prove after a remarkable breakthrough season, but as United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho hots up Greenwood will want to show again that he’s a prodigious talent who is going to prove very difficult to leave out.

Dimitar Berbatov

DIMITAR Berbatov believes United need two defensive signings as well as Jadon Sancho in this summer’s transfer window.

The former United striker has named rightback and centre-back as two areas Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should look to improve in if he is to build on a promising campaign.

United have made Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho their top priority this summer, with negotiations continuing between the two clubs.

M.E.N. Sport understands United are considering another attacking midfield signing and a left-sided centreback.

But Berbatov has his own transfer advice for Solskjaer as he highlighted in his Betfair blog what United need to mount a Premier League title challenge.

“They need a centreback, maybe a right-back also as Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the only option at the moment,” said the Bulgarian.

“It looks like Alexis Sanchez might stay at Inter permanently, which would make room for Jadon Sancho to go to United from Dortmund, and it would be a very interesting transfer.”

Berbatov also has a slight worry over the addition of Sancho, concerned that it could mean that talented teenager Mason Greenwood misses out on first-team football.

He added: “If they get the England man and the defenders, they can improve to a higher level.

“But I don’t want to see Greenwood dropped at this point.”
